We exist to ensure that books are not censored because of their themes, characters, or historical perspectives. We believe in the power of literature to ignite the imagination, foster empathy, preserve a multitude of historical points of view, and challenge the mind. We are committed to protecting access to books as a fundamental right in a democratic society.

Problem Statement

Across the United States, book bans are on the rise—not just in schools, but in libraries, prisons, and universities.

• These bans disproportionately target books that explore race, gender, sexuality, identity, and historical truths, silencing marginalized voices and narrowing the public narrative.
• According to PEN America, thousands of titles were banned in schools during the 2023–2024 school year alone.
